Rèiteach ("Betrothal"

During her research for "Leasan sa Bhàs", Diane uncovered another - much happier - story! It all came about from a lost piece of film, and the end result was a deeply moving half hour of television.

In 1952, Janet Macdonald prepared for her big day. But her wedding and “rèiteach” (a traditional ceremony to welcome a new bride into the community) were particularly unusual. The groom was a native of Scarp, and this was the first wedding on the island in the 20th century. But it would also be the last one, whilst the island was still inhabited.

In 2010, the Macdonald family prepared for the wedding of Janet's grand-daughter Joan in Harris. In our film, Janet sees images of her own wedding for the very first time ... from old archive, recovered quite by chance. An event of great cultural significance is recalled in beautiful imagery, and through the deeply personal memories and feelings of two island women. "Rèiteach" is nominated in the 2012 Celtic Media Festival, Best Factual Single category.
