Joan Mackenzie’s perfect rendition of this very old Gaelic song, led by vocable, provides the backdrop to a creepy tale of a dead mother, urging a young maid to protect her children from abuse by their step-mother. With the story thrust into the 21st century, director John Maclaverty chose to stay true to the powerful, bitter sentiment of the song and set it in Maryhill, Glasgow. Kate Dickie plays a social worker compelled by the actions of the mother’s ghost, to go to the aid of two young children, Alison Peebles co-stars. Steven Mochrie filmed the drama, with Noel Nellis editing.
